A recently published report reveals households in regional areas are among the best recyclers in the State.

Office of Environment and Heritage Chief Executive Lisa Corbyn said Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Bellingen residents topped the list of recyclers across NSW in the latest NSW Local Government Waste and Resource Recovery Data Report.

"Across the state, we're recycling more and sending less to landfill," Ms Corbyn said. "Coffs Harbour households have the highest recovery rates (79.9%), followed by Port Macquarie (70.7%) and Bellingen (70.3%). The NSW average is 45.1%." Liverpool City Council is the top performing Sydney metropolitan council in the Top 15, with a recovery rate of 69.1%.

The data showed variations in the performance of councils, with those using the best-practice 'three bin' system recording the best recovery rates.
"But while the news is positive, we still have a long way to go. It's estimated that three quarters of household waste going to landfill is recyclable and could be recovered for reuse.

"We will continue to work closely with councils and the waste industry to deliver even better results in the future."
